Modernism in Weimar
With the founding of the Deutsches Kaiserreich in 1871, Weimar became the symbol of an all-German culture. As a result, every epoch and political system attempted to leave decisive accents of the prevailing ideology in the city. Particularly impressive are the ambivalences that created the 20th century.
This guided city walk seeks to convey Weimar as a politically absorbed place and to point to the traces left by the different political attitudes in Weimar, architecturally in particular.
We will start our tour with the Deutsches Nationaltheater on the Theaterplatz and walk across the Goetheplatz and through the Weimarhallenpark to the former Gauforum. From there we will continue on to the marketplace towards the Park an der Ilm with the Mensa im Park and finish at the Henry van de Velde art school buildings, which were the seat of the Bauhaus in Weimar.
